Press Releases 2009  DECEMBER NEWS & EVENTS H1N1 Vaccine Now Available in Marion County Pharmacies Posted December 23, 2009 H1N1 vaccine is now available for anyone six months and older, including people over 65 and children six months through nine years who need a booster vaccine.  Pharmacies throughout Marion County are currently dispensing H1N1 injectable vaccine to members of the general public age 15 years and older.  A list of participating pharmacy locations is available on the Marion County Flu Website at http://www.co.marion.or.us/HLT.  Interested people may also call the Marion County Health Department at (503)584-4870 for information.  read more... H1N1 Vaccine Available to General Public Posted on December 11, 2009 Beginning Monday, December 14,H1N1 flu vaccine availability will be open to all people six months and older.  The H1N1 vaccine supply has increased enough that vaccination can be expanded beyond the initial priority groups.  However, if you are in one of the previous priority groups and have not yet received the vaccine it is still important for you to schedule an appointment.  "The best way to protect yourself from the H1N1 flu is to get the vaccine," says Dr. Karen Landers, Marion County Health Officer.  read more... CCTV to Air Live Call-in Show with County Health Officer Dr. Karen Landers Posted on November 10, 2009 Capital Community Television (CCTV), in partner with Marion County Health Department, will air a half hour program devoted to the flu on Friday, November 13, 2009, at 6:30 p.m.  "Flu Presentation and Live Call-in" will air on CCTV channel 21. During the first part of the program, Marion County Health Officer Dr. Karen Landers, will give a brief presentation on flu updates.  When the presentation is over, viewers are encouraged to call (503)588-644 to ask Dr. Landers a question.  This portion of the program is scheduled to last fifteen minutes, but it can be extended if there is a high volume of questions.  read more... OCTOBER NEWS & EVENTS Marion County Health Department H1N1 Vaccination Appointments Update Posted on October 30, 2009 Marion County Health Department (MCHD) will receive another shipment of 2009 H1N1 vaccine and will open their phone bank at 8:30 a.m. on November 4, 2009 to scheudle appointments. "While we are saving some of the vaccine for public clinics, we are sending most of our vaccine out to hospitals, health care providers, schools and emergency service providers," said Dr. Karen Landers, Marion County Health Officer.  "Therefore, we encourage adults in the priority groups to contact their provider first to see if they can schedule an appointment with them."  read more... Advisory panel on drugs, alcohol seeking members Posted on October 28, 2009 The Marion County Local Alcohol & Drug Planning Committee is looking for new members who can represent the interests of one or more minority cultural groups, including the Hispanic, Native American and/or Russian communities, rural communities, and education and physical health.  The committee is willing to rotate some of its meetings around the county for easier access for those from rural areas.  read more... Survey Shows Most Marion County Students are Alcohol and Drug Free Posted on October 28, 2009 According to the 2008 Oregon Healthy Teens (OHT) survey results, most Marion County students are alcohol and drug free. Nearly seventy percent of 8th graders and over half of 11th graders reported that they have not used drugs or alcohol in the past thirty days.  read more... Marion County Health Department H1N1 Vaccination Plan Posted on October 15, 2009 Like all other thirty-five counties in Oregon, Marion County Health Department (MCHD) began receiving and distributing H1N1 vaccine from the Oregon Department of Human Services (DHS) in early October 2009. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the State of Oregon set guidelines regarding who should receive the vaccine first, but each county and tribe in Oregon is responsible for developing a vaccine distribution plan that best serves that county.  read more... H1N1 Vaccine has arrived in Marion County Posted on October 8, 2009 The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have begun distributing 3.4 million doses of the H1N1 vaccine throughout the United States.  Marion County received 3,200 doses of this vaccine on October 5th.  Marion County's current supply of H1N1 vaccine is in the form of FluMist, a nasal spray.  FluMist may only be given to those between the ages of 2-49 who are healthy and not pregnant.  read more... Dog Shelter Schedultes New Foster Program Orientation Posted on September 29, 2009 Marion County Dog Shelter is seeking foster parent volunteers.  Volunteers care for sick and immature dogs in their homes.  Dogs in need of foster care include puppies who are too young to be adopted, dogs that need socialization or training, and dogs recovering from an injury or surgery.  The next foster care program orientation will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 17.  read more... Marion County Achieves Oregon's Highest Recycling Rate Ever Posted on September 15, 2009 Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) recently released its 17th annual survey of garbage haulers and private recycling and composting companies.  The report shows that once again Marion County leads the state in recycling efforts with a rate of 58.4 percent for 2008.  This "recovery rate," includes recylcing, composting and material burned for energy recovery.  The average statewide is 48.2 percent.  read more... Marion County Raising Minimum Charge at Transfer Stations Posted September 1, 2009 Beginning October 1, the minimum charge for solid waste disposal at the North Marion and Salem-Keizer Recylcling & Transfer Stations will be raised from $13 to $15. Free FluMist Vaccines Provided by Marion County at State Fair Posted August 25, 2009 The Marion County Health Department will be at the Oregon State Fair on Monday, August 31, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. providing free FluMist, a nasal flu vaccine for seasonal flu, while supplies last. Oregon's first confirmed death from novel H1N1 (swine) influenza reported in Marion County Posted on June 9, 2009 A Marion County woman with confiremed novel H1N1 (swine) influenza died on Sunday. The Marion County woman was hospitalized for eight days prior to her death.  She had multiple underlying health conditions, which placed her at high risk for infection and complications.    read more... Marion County Dog Sherlter Schedules New Foster Program Orientation Posted on June 4, 2009 Marion County Dog Shelter now has a volunteer foster care program.  Volunteers care for sick and immature dogs in their homes.  Dogs in need of foster care include puppies who are too young to be adopted, an abused dog that needs socialization and tender loving care for an injured dog that is recovering from surgery.  The next foster care program orientation will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 11.  read more... Oregon 150 Relay Kicks Off in the Canyon Posted on June 3, 2009 Saturday, June 13 will be the kick-off of Marion County's relay event to salute Oregon's 150th birthday.  The 150-mile trek begins in Idanha at 10:30 a.m. Local wildlife artist Ken Schaffner created the unique baton being used.  Schaffner is a native Oregonian, residing in the Santiam Canyon off the North Fork River.  The baton he is creating will be passed from community to community, along the 150-mile trek.  The baton, made from a forty to fifty year old white pine tree from Schaffner's Lyon's property, is 14 inches in length and sports an engraved salmon, covered bridge, river and trees.  read more...  Oregon 150 Relay Flier                            Ken Schaffner Marion County Health Department Woodburn Clinic to Relocate June 18 Posted on June 3, 2009 The Marion County Health Department will be moving to a new location on June 18, 2009.  The new building is located at 976 N. Survey of Willamette University Students Finds Low Exposure to Tobacco Sampling Posted on June 2, 2009 A recent survey of Willamette University students found that less than five percent had been exposed to either tobacco sampling or tobacco-sponsored events in the past year in Salem-Keizer.  Tobacco sampling has been in the forefront of recent media since introduction of House Bill 2358 in the Oregon legislature in January of 2009.  read more... County to Discontinue Sharing Cost of Gravel Road Dust Abatement Program Posted on May 20, 2009 Due to recent reductions in transportation funding, along with increasing maintenance costs, the Marion County Public Works Department can no longer share in the cost of the Lignin Sulfonate program for dust abatement on gravel roads.  A letter was recently sent to property owners and contractors who had previously participated in the discontinued cost-sharing program.  read more... Health Department Demobilizes the Departmental Operations Center Posted on May 15, 2009 The Marion County Health Department demobilized the Departmental Operations Center (DOC) on Wednesday, May 13, 2009.  This decision was made because the high-level response provided by the DOC is no longer necessary given that H1N1 influenza appears to be similar to the seasonal flu.  As a standard precaution, the Marion County Health Department epidemiology team will continue to monitor the situation.  read more... Plans for the Healthy Communities Project Posted on May 14, 2009 Obesity, lack of exercise and smoking are risk factors of ever increasing chronic diseases in our community.  From July through September 2008, the chronic disease prevention subcommittee of the Marion County Health Advisory Board conducted a community needs assessment.  The purpose of the assessment was to identify health policies that were already in place, as well as identify areas where policies that address chronic disease prevention can be implemented.  read more ... Recruiting Volunteers for Medical Reserve Corps Posted on May 12, 2009 Last fall, the Marion County Health Department received funding from the Department of Homeland Security and the National Association of County and City Health Officials to establish a Medical Reserve Corps in Marion County.  The newly formed Marion County Medical Reserve Corps (MCMRC) is a volunteer organizaiton that promotes a safe, health and prepared community by establishiing a core network of trained medical professionals and community volunteers who contribute their skills and expertise during local and statewide public health emergencies.  read more...
