We are looking for volunteers who are committed, caring and responsible to truly make a difference in the lives of the abandoned and homeless animals in our care. The Marion County Dog Shelter’s volunteer program has a variety of options for anyone wanting to help dogs either directly or indirectly. You can make a difference!
How to Become a Volunteer
For more information or to register for orientation, please email us or call 503-566-6966. Getting Started To get the ball rolling, turn in a completed volunteer application. You can fax or mail it to the address on the application, email it to our volunteer coordinator, or you can turn it in at the Marion County Dog Shelter. For more information, click here to view our volunteer manual. Volunteer Time Commitment Once you have attended an orientation, you can set your own schedule. When you have the free time, just drop in on us when it is convenient for you during our open hours. Only a few positions required advance scheduling (such as Outreach Worker, Adoption Counselor, and Shelter Tech). Volunteer Opportunities Dog Walkers! We need to caring & enthusiastic volunteers to walk and play with the dogs throughout the day. Outreach Workers! Volunteers are needed to promote the Dog Shelter’s programs and dog adoptions at offsite events. Office Helper!We are always busy in the office. You'll do general office duties and assist the public. Adoption Counselor!This job requires experience as a shelter volunteer and additional training with shelter staff. You'll help match people with pets. Foster Parents!This job takes place in your own home. Most often we need foster parents willing to devote the time, attention and affection to puppies with or without mamas, dogs recovering from surgery or illness, and dogs with behavioral issues. We supply the training and all food and supplies. Click here for more information. Dog Transporter! Experienced drivers are needed to transport shelter animals to veterinary appointments, offsite special events, and other shelters and rescues. Special Events Helper! The Dog Shelter sponsors special community and in-house events at which we need volunteer help. Shelter Technician!Assist our shelter staff in maintaining the safety and well being of the dogs in our care, which may include handling dogs for evaluation, taking temperatures, running tests, clean up after dogs, and assisting with feeding. Previous shelter tech experience required.
