It is a virus that infects the respiratory tract (nose, throat, lungs) causing symptoms including fever, headache, extreme tiredness, dry cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, and muscle aches. Children can have additional symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, but these symptoms are uncommon in adults. The infection can lead to severe complications of underlying diseases, pneumonia and death. Influenza is a severe respiratory illness associated with more than 500 deaths in Oregon.
