“Mumps” is a viral infection of the parotid, a gland that produces saliva and is located in front of and below each ear. It is spread by droplets during coughing or sneezing or through direct contact with saliva. The fever accompanying mumps is usually gone in 3-4 days, and the swelling and pain are cleared in 7 days. It takes from 12-25 days (usually 18 days) before symptoms develop after exposure to an infected person.
SYMPTOMS:Symptoms could be fever, swelling and tenderness of facial and neck glands.
If you suspect that you or your child has mumps, see your doctor.
CONTAGIOUS PERIOD:Mumps is most contagious 6-7 days before onset, until 9 days after onset.
