Juvenile Justice Issues

Substance abuse/addiction, including the increase in methamphetamine use among adolescents. Creates cognitive and developmental impairment, increases criminal associates and activities, and requires intensive and a lengthy commitment to treatment.

There is an increasing number of youth within and entering the juvenile justice system with a diagnosable mental health issue.

Co-occurring disorders. Addressing the needs of youth and the community where criminal behavior is exhibited by youth who have both issues with substance abuse and diagnosable mental health issues.

Increasing involvement and association in gang involvement and related activity, including substance abuse, violence, vandalism, and graffiti.

Youth who disengage from the education system in adolescence are at an increased risk of involvement in criminal activity. Future success prospects are hampered without an education and work skills.

There is an increasing inability for youth to remain in their family environments due to family abuse, neglect, and substance abuse. There are only limited resources for adolescents in foster homes, and residential programs. This adds to youth running away and the adolescent homeless population.
