VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES AT THEMARION COUNTY DOG SHELTER
All volunteer jobs require a reference check. Some jobs may require a driving history check and proof of vehicle insurance. It will be noted if a driving history check and insurance is required.
Adoption CounselorRequires training with an experienced Adoption Counselor. Knowledge of breeds and breed traits is very helpful. Duties would include counseling potential adopters to help find the right pet for them and to make sure they understand the responsibilities and long term commitment necessary of owning a dog. Time is spent getting to know the dogs and their personalities to identify the most suitable home and assist prospective adopters with the selection of a pet best suited to their family and lifestyle. Adoption counselors would also make follow-up calls to recent adopters to request information about how their new pet is acclimating to their new home and offer support for any adjustment problems.
Dog WalkerWalk dogs for exercise, socialization, and training around the premises (and sometimes off premises). A walker provides dogs the opportunity to get out and stretch their legs, play and experience some basic training. A walker can also sit with dogs providing "quiet time” to help relieve them from the stress of shelter life. Some walkers may also take dogs around the Salem area and various parks (on a lead at all times) with manager’s permission. Dogs are assigned to Walkers based on the dogs’ needs, as well as the Walker’s ability, training, and experience.
Foster HomeCare for one of our dogs in your home while they are awaiting adoption. If you love dogs, this can be one of the most rewarding jobs we have. Many people who provide a Foster Home may work during the day, but they should be able to spend evening time with the foster dog and give all the exercise, love, and attention the dog needs.
Office AssistantIncludes various administrative tasks such as typing, filing, researching computer records, photocopying, organizing adoption packets, and writing. Other tasks include making and answering phone calls, greeting the public and answering their questions as needed.
Outreach WorkersProvide transportation for dogs and equipment to and from the event. Set-up tables, reader boards, other information for outreaches. Interact with the public, providing them information on the shelter and adoption, and allow the public to interact with the dogs. Walk the dogs, keeping them on leash with “Adopt Me” vests and cleaning up after them. Make sure the event site is clean. Return the dogs and equipment to the shelter.
Shelter Technican AssistantAssist the Shelter Technicians in maintaining the safety and well being of the dogs while in our care. Help with dogs that are new to the shelter and those with behavioral concerns. This also would include assisting the Veterinary Technician if needed with tasks such as, handling dogs for evaluation, taking temperatures, and running tests. Clean up after dogs and assist with feeding. Previous shelter tech experience required.
