Master Recycler Program Information Do you want to:  Learn how to reduce your waste? Conserve natural resources? Motivate others to change their habits? Make a difference? Applications for the Fall 2010 class are now available.     The Master Recycler Newsletter is a monthly publication that is sent to all Master Recyclers.  It contains lots of current information related to waste reduction, recycling, green building, and other topics. If so, you should become a Master Recycler!  After completing the training, participants undertake 30 hours of community "payback" through independent projects and outreach events. Over 600 people have participated in the program, volunteering more than 18,000 hours throughout Marion County. The following list is not comprehensive and many Master Recyclers develop their own "self-contained" projects. Create projects that focus on waste prevention and recycling at work, home, school, in their place of worship, and in the community. Educate the public on the hazards of and alternatives to common household chemicals at Household Hazardous Waste Collection Events. Speak to groups about recycling and reducing waste at home and work Distribe information at annual events. Volunteer to educate the community at Earth Day and other local events and festivals. Organize neighborhood cleanup events. Work with schools, scout groups, and others to help improve their recycling programs. Lead tours of the recycling center. What Master Recycler volunteers have done: Staffed information tables at: Marion County Fair Salem Summer in the City Spring Garden Fair   Implemented recycling at their workplaces, including: Leslie Middle School, Salem Willamette University, Salem Trus Joist MacMillan, Stayton   Initiated recycling programs at apartment buildings and schools.   Educated the public about solid waste reduction at recycling depots and department stores. The Master Recycler Course Curriculum Master Recycler training includes 40 hours of instruction: 8 evening classes, a composting workshop and two field trips to local solid waste and recycling sites. Classes are taught by local experts in solid waste from business and government and non profit sectors.
