Transfer stations in Marion County are for public use. Garbage brought here is transported to the Marion County Waste-to-Energy Facility and incinerated. Energy is recovered and turned into electricity which is purchased by Portland General Electric. Compostable material goes to a commercial composting facility and is processed into a soil amendment.

Car Batteries (place in lead-acid/car battery container)

Mixed paper, cardboard and Grey board

Glass and colored glass - no dishes!

Electronics: stereos, computers, phones, printers, TV's, microwaves, photocopy machines

Plastics: Rigid containers with recycling numbers (#'s) 1-7

Latex paint (up to 20 gallons of oil base paint can be taken to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility or mixed with absorbant material and placed in the garbage)

Plastic bags and tarps without metal grommets (must be clean)


Batteries (household batteries accepted separately from vehicle batteries)

Metals (anything that is at least 90% metal)

Printer cartridges

Cell phones, PDA's, MP3 players, cameras

Eyeglasses

Hearing Aids

Motor oil

Used cooking oil

Bicycles and scooters

Fluorescent tubes and bulbs (limit of 10 per customer/day)

Fluorescent lights may be recycled 10:00-4:00
on Friday, Saturday & Sunday only.
Limit of 10 per visit

Businesses must schedule an appointment
at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility.

Reduced rates are given for sorted clean compostable materials or wood waste. Recyclable materials are free, except tires and appliances. These materials must be placed in special areas.

Payment Options: Customers may pay with cash, personal checks, debit or credit cards including Master Card and Visa. Please note that you will be required to show photo ID for checks and card payments.

Marion County No Longer Accepts AMERICAN EXPRESS or DISCOVER Credit Cards.

Unacceptable Materials

Disposal of household hazardous wastes is prohibited at the transfer stations in the paid disposal or the recycling areas. Appropriate disposal is available for these items at our Household Hazardous Waste facility (located separately at the Salem-Keizer Transfer Station). The facility is open on Thursdays and the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month from 8:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.).  Individuals do not need an appointment, but businesses must schedule an appointment and businesses will be charged a fee. Note Regarding Unrestrained Loads

All unrestrained loads will be charged an additional $10.00 fee. Fees double for each repeated occurrence.

An unrestrained load is defined as any load that can drop, sift, leak, blow or otherwise escape from the transporting vehicle. Trash in closed plastic bags that are below the sidewalls is acceptable. If bags are above sidewalls, they must be restrained with a rope, net or tarp. Tailgates shall be used.
