Oregon Native Trees Recommended for Use in Public Right of Ways

BENEFITS

1. Big Leaf Maple Tough, shade, does not mind typical city pollution, a fast growing tree.

2. Quaking Aspen
More common on East side, but native here also. A more refined tree, smaller, beautiful.

3. Pacific Madrone
Unique to this part of the world. A beautiful broad leaf evergreen.

4. Vine Maple
A small tree but wonderful-- twisted branches and superb fall colors, also tough.

5. Garry (OR White) Oak
Perfect, but very, very slow growing.

6. Paper Birch
Spectacular in clumps, occurs in NE Oregon and then picks up on the coast in mid Washington and on up to Alaska

7. Red Alder
Fast growing, a nice tree but the park folks probably consider it a low class tree for ornamental use.

8. Pacific WIllow
A fine tree.

9. Black Hawthorne
Thorns, birds like the fruit.

10. Choke Cherry
Common around the 45 parallel, but a nice small tree.

11. Western Crabapple
A small tree, birds like the fruit.

12. Oregon Ash
Grows fast, nice medium size tree

13. Cascara
Dark green glossy leaves, bark used for medicine (would someone strip bark and sell it?)

In the small to medium conifers: Shore Pine, Western White Pine, Mtn. Hemlock (slow), OR Myrtle, Western Yew, Bakers Cypress, Brfewers Spruce (rare), Incense Cedar
