Scholarship Information

Marion County Public Works - Environmental Services is giving a scholarship for the
2009-2010 school year. The application deadline is April 2, 2010.

Scholarship Award Program

Marion County Department of Public Works - Environmental Services will be awarding a $2,500 scholarship, along with a summer internship, to a graduating high school student who will be entering an Accredited College/University of Higher Education located within the United States, on a full-time basis, pursuing a degree in Environmental Studies, Engineering Programs, or other suitable major related to solid waste management.

Listed below are some important deadlines and guidelines for completing the awards application:

I. IMPORTANT DEADLINES

April 2, 2010 - All completed application forms and back-up documentation must be delivered to Marion County or postmarked by this date. Send to the Marion County Public Works - Environmental Services, 5155 Silverton Road NE, Salem, Oregon 97305. Phone (503) 588-5169, FAX (503) 588-3565. The application forms may be photocopied if needed.

April 30, 2010 - The selected applicant will be notified of the results of the evaluation by the Department. Applicants not selected will be notified in writing shortly afterwards.

II. SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

A. To be considered for an award, you must be a graduating high school senior or graduate equivalent candidate in Marion County, who has been accepted for enrollment in the field of environmental studies, engineering, or related field, at an accredited 4-year college or university located within the United States. Additionally, possession of a valid Oregon's drivers license is required.

B. The scholarship award will be disbursed to the college or university's financial aid department. Distribution will be made in equal payments at the beginning of each quarter or semester, as long as a minimum 2.0 grade point average for the previous term is maintained.

C. The Department of Solid Waste Management reserves the right not to award any scholarship for any given year.

III. CRITERIA FOR AWARD SELECTION

A. Academics 30%
(ie., Grade Point Average (4.0 Scale), ACT and/or SAT scores, Academic achievement award and honors)

B. Citizenship 30%
(ie., Student organization participation, Scouting, High School ROTC, military, etc., Charitable, civic, or religious organization work)

C. Activities 30%
(ie., Athletics, Music, drama, debate, Student paper, yearbook)

D. Essay 10%
Note: Relatives of any employee of Marion County are ineligible for this award.

IV. POST-AWARD CONDITIONS

The recipient will be expected to work summer break 2010 (approximately mid-June through early-September) as an intern for Marion County Public Works - Environmental Services as part of this Scholarship Program (this temporary position will be as a Public Works Intern, which currently pays approximately $11.63 per hour).

V. APPLICATION COMPLETION

A. Attached are the forms you will need to complete the application. Each applicant will be required to fill out the application forms and have it, along with all required back-up documentation, turned in to Marion County (or postmarked) by April 2, 2010. All applications must be typed.

B. Should you require additional space for response to any question, attach a separate page with the appropriate information. Upon completing the application forms, sign and date the form at the bottom.

C. Back-up Documentation to be submitted:

1. High school transcripts

2. SAT and/or ACT scores

3. Copy of valid Oregon Driver's License

D. An essay, as described on the application form, is to be completed and submitted by each applicant. Any information provided by the applicant will be subject to verification by Marion County.

The Marion County Department of Public Works - Environmental Services feels that education, of both the public and college students, is one way to further the understanding of solid waste management issues. Through the scholarship program, we hope to facilitate the education of college students, in hopes that they will become knowledgeable and responsible solid waste management professionals.
