Rural Mixed Recycling Service

Items accepted in mixed recycling

At the request of Marion County, haulers in the county provided mixed recycling roll carts to all rural and sparse customers and began providing pick-up service on July 1, 2011.

Rural residents now can avoid trips to recycle depots that are often miles away, or they can divert more material from the garbage to be given a second life by recycling!

There was also a rate increase, approved by the Marion County Board of Commissioners after a public hearing in November 2010, to cover the additional operating costs that the haulers incur to provide the service. The monthly increase to "rural" customers isabout $7 per month; the increase to "sparse" customers is about $9 per month - check with your hauler if you need to know which category your rural propery falls under.

The rate increase can be completely or nearly offset in many households. Households that are diverting recycleable material to the new roll cart may be able to switch to a smaller garbage cart for a lower rate.
