Medical Reserve Corps Unit Hosting Warming Shelter at Marion Square Park
Salem, OR – Marion County’s volunteer Medical Reserve Corps Unit, in cooperation with the City of Salem, is hosting a warming shelter at Marion Square Park in Salem. The 20 x 20 tent will be set up between the Marion and Center Street Bridges and will open today at 2 p.m. The warming shelter is expected to remain open through the weekend or as long as necessary.
The warming shelter will be open and staffed during the day and at night. It is primarily intended to serve homeless residents who need to temporarily get out of the extreme cold; however, it does not have capacity to provide for overnight stays.
Marion County Emergency Manager John Vanderzanden said, “While this is not a traditional medical corps operation, we are grateful to our volunteers for meeting this need. The lack of adequate shelter combined with severe weather can pose a significant health risk to vulnerable members of our community.” Additional assistance is being provided by volunteers from Marion County’s and Salem’s Citizen Emergency Response Teams (CERT).
The Marion County Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) of Oregon is a volunteer organization, supported by Marion County Emergency Management, of medical and public health professionals. Local volunteers reside and serve in Marion and Polk Counties and train to respond to local medical needs during disasters. For more information about on-going volunteer opportunities with the MRC please visit www.serv-or.og or contact Marion County Emergency Management at (503) 588-5108.
