Sampling Methods: All sampling was done on site using a limminous test kit. Samples were initally collected in glass jars; when necessary samples were then put into appropratly sized bottels, which were included in the test kit.
We tested for the following:
Ingredients and directions:
Dissolved Oxygen Collect Sample 1. Rinse Sample Bottle. 2. Submerge bottle, remove cap. 3. Tap sides of bottle to release air bubbles. 4. With bottle submerged replace cap. Remove bottle from water. 5. If air bubbles remain, repeat sampling process.
Fix (Preserve) Sample 1. Add 8 drops Manganous Sulfate (#4167). 2. Add 8 drops Alkaline Potassium Iodide Azide (#7166). 3. Use spoon to add 1 gm of Sulfamic Acid Powder (#6286). 4. Cap and mix until reagent and precipitate dissolve.
Test Procedure 1. Fill titration tube to 20 ml line with fixed sample. 2. Fill titrator (syringe) with Sodium Thiosulfate, 0.025N. Add one drop at a time to sample. Swirl between drops. Stop when color becomes faint yellow. 3. Remove titrator and cap. Add 8 droops of Starch Indicator Solution. Replace cap and titrator. 4. Titrate (add drops) until blue color disappears. 5. Read titrator scale for results in ppm Dissolved Oxygen.
Ingredients 1. Manganous sulfate solution (36% manganous sulfate) 2. Alkaline potassium iodide azide poison (59% potassium hydroxide, 1% sodium azide) 3. Starch indicator solution (.13%salicylic acid, cas#54-21-7, .05% soluble starch, cas# 9005-25-8; deionized water to 100% cas#7732-18-5) 4. Sodium Thiosulfate .025N (.04% sodium hydroxide, .68% sodium thiosulfate, deionized water to 100%) 5. Sulfamic Acid
Nitrate-N Procedure: 1. Fill tube to 2.5ml line with sample. 2. Dilute to 5 mil with mixed Acid reagent. 3. Cap tube and mix gently. 4. Wait 2 min. 5. Add one level measure of Nitrate Reducing Agent. Cap tube and invert 30-40 time/min. 6. Wait 10 min. 7. Mix and remove cap. Insert tube into comparer and match color to read ppm Nitrogen. To convert to Nitrate, multiply result by 4.4.
Ingredients: 1. Mixed Acid (17% ammonium chloride, 2% acetic acid) 2. Nitrate Reducing agent (10%manganous sulfate, 7% cadmium powder)
Phosphate Procedure: 1. Fill tube to 10ml line with sample water. 2. Add 1.0 ml Phosphate Acid Reagent. 3. Cap tube. Mix gently. 4. Add one level measure Phosphate Reducing Agent. 5. Cap tube and mix until reagent dissolved. 6. Wait 5 min. 7. Remove Cap. Insert tube into comparer. Match color and read in ppm Phosphate.
Ingredients: 1. Phosphate Acid Reagent (12% sulfuric acid) 2. Phosphate Reducing Agent (90% sucrose, 10% d-iosascorbic acid)
pH Procedure: 1. Rinse test tube with sample water. Fill to 5ml line with sample water. 2. While holding dropper bottle or piper vertically, add indicator solution. 3. Cap and invert several times to mix. 4. Insert test tube into Octet Comparator. Match sample color to a Color standard. Record pH.
Ingredients 1. Indicator solution (52% ethyl alcohol, 3% methyl alcohol, 0.1% dinitrophenol)
