MCSO K-9 UNITDeputy Todd Swendsen and Neros at a recent Neighborhood Watch Meeting The Marion County Sheriff’s Office Canine Unit consists of six canine teams; five are patrol teams and one is dedicated completely to narcotics detection. All six of the dogs are German Shepherds, five of which were imported from Europe. The patrol dogs are trained to track for suspects who have fled from crime scenes. They are also trained to conduct building and area searches for criminal suspects, protect the handler and to hold violent offenders from escaping. The narcotics detection dog is trained to detect narcotics substances. He is assigned to the correctional facility, although, he is routinely called out to assist Detectives with search warrants or vehicle searches to locate narcotics. The canine unit routinely conducts public demonstrations at schools, churches or community events or for community groups or organizations.
