MCSO K-9 UNITDeputy Wollenschlaeger and K9 "Yo"
There are seven canine teams in the MCSO K-9 Unit; four are patrol teams and three are dedicated completely to narcotics detection. The team has one german shepherd, four belgian malinois and two labradors.
Patrol dogs are trained to track for suspects who have fled from crime scenes. They are also trained to conduct building and area searches for criminal suspects, protect the handler and to hold violent offenders from escaping.
The narcotics detection dogs are trained to detect narcotics substances. One is assigned to the Marion County Jail, although, he is sometimes called out to assist Detectives with search warrants or vehicle searches to locate narcotics.
The K-9 Unit conducts public demonstrations at schools, churches or community events.
