Enforcement Reserve Deputy Program
The Marion County Sheriff's Office, Enforcement Reserve Division, accepts applications for Reserve Deputies throughout the year. Application deadline is in May for the training academy beginning in the fall of that year. The Reserve Academy begins early November and ends in May of the following year. Academy training consists of over 300 hours of instruction and practical application in the Criminal Justice System, Motor Vehicle Law, Criminal Law and many other law enforcement related areas.
The Reserve Academy has been in existence since 1969. It trains both Reserve Police Officers and Reserve Deputy Sheriff's for the surrounding counties.
The role of a Reserve Deputy is to assist in the following areas: community policing, patrol duties, marine patrol, prisoner transport, mental health transport, court services, crime scene security, hospital security and other related areas.
Persons successfully completing the reserve academy will be assigned to one of four squads within the Reserve Section.
NOTE: Applicants are required to pass: a written exam, and oral board examination, a psychological exam, a police background check and a driving record check.
Enforcement Reserve Deputy Sheriff Reqirements:
Mission: To supplement the Sheriff's Office staff as directed by the Sheriff.
Minimum Age: 21.
Probation Period: 1 year, which begins after successful completion of the MCSO Reserve Sheriff's Academy.
Membership: None.
Requirements:
Must be a U.S. citizen and a resident of Oregon.
Must be age 21 upon graduation from the Training Academy.
Must be in good physical health.
Must have no criminal convictions and have an acceptable driving record.
Must be a high school graduate or GED equivalent.
Must have 20/20 vision (or correctable to 20/20) with normal color discrimination.
Must not belong to any subversive organization.
Must submit to a complete background investigation.
Must have no employment or school problem which could interfere with required duty time or court time.
Must complete a standard Marion County Civil Service Application form.
Must be employed in an occupation that does not result in a conflict of interest with the Sheriff's Office as determined by the Sheriff. Examples of such occupations include, but are not limited to:
Police Officer for another agencyReserve Officer for another agencyPrivate InvestigatorOwner/operator of a security serviceTaxi driverBartender/cocktail waitressOwner of a liquor establishment
Required Training: Complete the Mid-Valley-Reserve-Training Academy, hosted by MCSO and several other agencies within the area The cost to attend the academy is 350.00 dollars. Attend and successfully complete ongoing training as required.

Any uniform that may be required during the acdemy will be provided for students. These have consisted of one Polo-Style short sleeve shirt and one pair of BDU Style pants
Boots, gloves, handgun, flashlight, ASP, handcuffs;
Any other authorized cold weather gear not supplied by the Sheriff's Office;
ALL duty gear - a list will be provided. All duty gear MUST meet departmental standards.

Additional Information: Reserve Deputies must attend court when subpoenaed. Willingness to help people and a desire to be of service to the public and the Sheriff's Office.
