HB2377 prohibits all drivers from using a mobile communication device while operating a motor vehicle. Under the new law, if you are over the age of 18, you may use a wireless device if you are using a hands free accessory that allows you to keep both hands on the wheel while you are driving. Drivers that are under the age of 18 may not use a wireless device in any case except specific situations such as an emergency or farming or agricultural operations.
The primary goal of the Traffic Safety Team is to reduce the number of crashes through enforcement and education efforts.
Formed in 1996, the Marion County Traffic Safety Team consists of nine positions. These positions consist of Motorcycle units, Mustangs and a Dodge Charger. In 2004, the team was restructured as a self-funding unit. This structure using funds from traffic citations versus your tax dollars. This system effectively uses funds from those contributing to traffic safety problems to enforce traffic laws and our traffic safety programs.
The team is based out of the Marion County Sheriff's Central District Office located at 3940 Aumsville Hwy SE in Salem and is responsible for the enforcement of traffic laws and conducting traffic safety education in Marion County.The team participates in several grant programs including:

Marion County Crash Team
The Crash Team is an interagency unit made up of Sheriff's Deputies and Oregon State Police, Salem, Keizer and Woodburn Police Departments. Their charge is to investigate all fatal and major non-fatal traffic accidents where a contributing factor may be criminal in nature. Crash Team members assist the primary law enforcement agency in the collection of evidence, diagram, measurement, and reconstruction of the accident scene. Training for the team is extremely intensive and time consuming. Deputies selected for this team are recognized "expert witnesses" and their expertise is called upon in various locations throughout the state.
Traffic Crashes are the leading killer of people ages two to 34. National statistics gathered for 2006, 2007 and 2008 show 111,100 fatal traffic crashes. Oregon had 1,198 fatal crashes during that same time frame. Traffic crashes kill an average of 36,700 people each year. Crashes also resulted in a direct cost of $19,000,000 and an indirect cost of nearly $62,000,000 to the citizens of Marion County based on 2002 crash statistics.
