School Resource Program
The MCSO School Resource Officer program operates within 15 public schools serving more than 7,000 students in Marion County at the elementary and middle school levels. The SRO's role is to develop, administer, and present Community Policing, Personal Safety, Community Relations, and Youth programs both in and out of the public school system.
The SRO also provides a safe, preventative presence, which also involves conducting criminal investigations that may occur in the schools. They also often are called upon to step out of the traditional Police Officer role to be a Counselor, Teacher and Mentor to students. They’re available to students, parents and families and work hard to prevent violence and foster positive relationships between children, families, and school staff.
Due to limited funding, SRO’s are assigned duties at more than one school. Their duties also may include assisting Patrol Deputies in conducting criminal investigations involving students and patrolling the areas in the vicinity of their assigned schools.
