Treatment of Trauma by Behavioral Health Clinicians
Trauma-informed is a current national topic of interest. Most child welfare and treatment agencies and programs are looking at the topic and deciding how to implement best practices in this area.
Mid-Valley Behavioral Care Network (BCN), a Mental Health Organization in Oregon, initiated a workgroup which has charted new territory in trauma-informed care. The workgroup is made up of members of BCN, local County mental health agencies, Department of Human Services Child Welfare District 3, and Portland State University DHS staff trainers. There are three counties involved in the BCN Youth & Family Workgroup: Yamhill, Polk and Marion. Marion County is a large area, and membership is composed of the Clinical Supervisors for their Integrated Delivery System, including Catholic Community Services, Easter Seals Children’s Therapy Center, Children’s Behavioral Health, New Perspectives, Options Counseling Services, and Valley Mental Health. The workgroup will adapt the Guidelines over time in relationship to new research and changes in the field of trauma-informed supports and services.
As a BCN region, we are collaborating across agencies to establish Guidelines to ensure that Therapists, DHS Child Welfare Caseworkers and Caregivers are competent to serve individuals who have suffered trauma. The Guidelines set a common best practice and provide detailed skill expectations and training guidelines. This contributes to the quality of workforce development in the region. A primary goal of this project is to link children and youth who have suffered trauma to a competent clinician.
