    Recognizing Suicide Prevention Awareness Month in Marion County

    Posted by: Health and Human Services

    On Wednesday, September 1, the Marion County Board of Commissioners proclaimed September to be Suicide Prevention Awareness Month in the county. In recognition, Marion County Health & Human Services (MCHHS) will be participating in a statewide campaign bringing awareness to suicide prevention efforts.

    On Thursday, September 9, 2021, members of the Mid-Valley Suicide Prevention Coalition will participate in a "Signs of Hope" event, at which MCHHS staff will hold signs sharing positive messages and information about local resources. MCHHS employees will participate outside of the department's Center Street and Silverton Road locations from 11 a.m.-11:30 a.m.

    Much like a mental health diagnosis, suicidal thoughts can impact anyone, regardless of age, race, sexual orientation, faith, or background. Those living with suicidal ideation often do not feel safe or know how to reach out for help. By participating in Signs of Hope, the department hopes to bring awareness to the variety of resources available locally.

    Community members are encouraged to participate in the campaign by:

    • Learning the risk factors, protective factors, and warning signs of suicide;
    • Taking a suicide prevention gatekeeper training, such as Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR);
    • Participating in a webinar by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, such as "Talk Saves Lives," or "More than Sad";
    • Joining a regional suicide prevention coalition; or
    • Sharing resources in their community.

    Anyone experiencing thoughts of suicide, or those who would like to learn more about the resources listed above, may visit the Mid-Valley Suicide Prevention Coalition website for more information: mvsuicideprevention.org
