"Just Eat It" Free Film Screening

Posted by: Public Works - Environmental Services

Marion County Environmental Services is pleased to sponsor a free screening of the film "Just Eat It" on Wednesday, October 7, 2015, at 6:30 p.m. in the Loucks Auditorium at the Salem Public Library. The documentary film explores the issue of food waste and food rescue. A discussion will follow with guest Josh Gwin, the retail food resource coordinator at Marion-Polk Food Share as well as Griselda Puga, a waste reduction coordinator from Marion County. Griselda will present the Save the Food campaign and encourage food waste prevention.

"Just Eat It is a film that engages the community to take action and is the perfect introduction to understanding the seriousness of preventable food waste," explains Griselda. Filmmakers and food lovers Jen and Grant dive into the issue of waste from the farm, through retail, all the way to the back of their own fridge. After catching a glimpse of the billions of dollars of good food that is tossed each year in North America, they pledge to quit grocery shopping cold turkey and survive only on foods that would otherwise be thrown away.

The average American family throws away one fourth of all food purchased, and in Marion County, food takes up 20% of our garbage by weight. "We'd like to see that statistic change so that residents can save money, time, and valuable resources," says Griselda. For more information, contact Griselda Puga at (503) 566-4159 or visit www.savethefood.net.
