Brown's Island Compost Facility

Only yard debris, including grass clippings, leaves, branches, and vegetative material will be accepted. Lumber, rocks, sod, and dirt will not be accepted.

There will be a fee of $15.00 per cubic yard, with a minimum of $15.00, for yard debris disposal.

The Brown’s Island Demolition Landfill is permitted by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality as a demolition landfill. The permit restricts the types of materials which may be accepted.

Disposal Fees and Payment Information

The charge for disposing of these materials is $50.00 per cubic yard, with a minimum charge of $50.00 starting July 1, 2026.

Please note that lightweight materials (like Visqueen) may be disposed of for less money at the Salem-Keizer Recycling & Transfer Station because the rate is based on weight, not volume as it is at the Brown's Island Facility.

Payment Options: Customers may pay with cash, personal checks, debit or credit cards including Master Card and Visa. $100 bills cannot be accepted at this facility. Marion County no longer accepts American Express or Discover credit cards.

Unacceptable Materials

Certain wastes are not acceptable for disposal at Marion County Disposal Facilities. If you have this type of waste, call the Marion County Department of Environmental Services for instructions on proper disposal.

Disposal of household hazardous waste is prohibited at the transfer stations in the paid disposal or the recycling areas. Appropriate disposal is available at our Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility (located separately at the Salem-Keizer Transfer Station).

The following materials are unacceptable:

Biomedical Waste: Pathological waste, biological waste, syringes, sharps, needles, animal remains, cesspool and other human waste
Radioactive materials
Sewage sludge
Organic Debris: Wood waste, yard clippings, sod, tree/shrub trimmings, cardboard, or paper products

Liquid waste
Containers of oil
Closed barrels, tanks, or containers
Rail road ties and telephone poles
Barrels, drums, or containers marked: Flammable, Dangerous, Poison, Corrosive, Oxidizer, Non-Flammable Gas, Explosives, or Radioactive.
Carpet
Household Garbage
Metal

Unrestrained Loads

All unrestrained loads will be charged an additional $10.00 fee. This fee doubles for each repeated occurrence.

An unrestrained load is defined as any load that can drop, sift, leak, blow or otherwise escape from the transporting vehicle. Trash in closed plastic bags that are below the sidewalls is acceptable. If bags are above sidewalls, they must be restrained with a rope, net or tarp. Tailgates shall be used.

Unscreened Compost Pick Up

The Brown’s Island Compost Facility offers unscreened compost for large-volume pick up. Unscreened compost is made up of all of the yard debris collected at the two transfer stations as well as yard debris brought in from local municipalities. That material is then ground up to a smaller size (usually 4 inches and smaller) and then placed in windrows to actively compost. After several weeks of turning and aerating the material, the ground up yard debris has completed its compost process. Local landscape supply facilities then haul away this material and process it further (screening it down for size) and market the finished product as a compost that can be added to soil for additional benefits.

In order to be eligible for this material, you must have the capability of hauling at least 20 cubic yards per load legally.

Individuals or businesses who are interested in this material should fill out the below application. Applications will be evaluated and a member of Marion County Public Works will communicate with each applicant regarding approval. If approved, an account identification will be created for tracking purposes, and hauling will be coordinated prior to any material being picked up.
