Canyon Comeback Volunteer Series (and free tree giveaway!)
Canyon Comeback
On labor day weekend 2020, the Beachie Creek Fire swept through the Santiam Canyon leaving behind a devastated community, decimated habitat for fish and wildlife, and altered the landscape for years to come.
Marion County has been hard at work helping our community rebuild and looking for hope in tragedy. Marion County Environmental Services is working tirelessly on planning for a better future, learning about post-fire recovery, and restoring the natural environment.
As a part of this effort, we want to invite you to learn with us and be a part of the future of our parks. We have scheduled three volunteer days throughout spring and summer 2023 that will give you the opportunity to learn about restoration, plants, and habitat as well as leave your mark in Marion County parks. Explore the pages below for more information on each event:
-
April 1st: Free tree give away, in partnership with the North Santiam Watershed Council and the Santiam Long-Term Recovery Group
-
April 2nd: Plant trees with us in Packsaddle Park
-
Coming in May: Weed Wrangle and native plant identification
-
Coming in July: Bat Box Day of Fun! Build bat boxes and bird nest platforms for our parks!
Due to wildfires, the following parks are closed:
- Salmon Falls
- Bear Creek
- North Fork
- Niagara
- Minto
The long-term goal for Marion County Parks is to redevelop in a way that anticipates how the public will recreate in the future, while also building climate and environmentally resilient parks that future generations can enjoy.
Parks has been presented with a once-in-a-generation opportunity to start fresh and forge a new vision for recreation in the Santiam Canyon. This vision will provide diverse recreational opportunities and create a sustainable parks program that benefits the region and visitors.
You can explore the current recovery plan now.
