Volunteer Recognition
Volunteerism plays an important role here at Marion County, helping to build our relationship with citizens while building our capacity to deliver important services and supports. We are fortunate as we benefit from a community committed to civic engagement, and many volunteers make significant contribution in time, energy and expertise. Each year the Board of Commissioners recognizes outstanding volunteers with our Annual Volunteer Awards.
2019 Volunteer Award Recipients
Due to COVID19 restrictions, our 2019 Volunteer Awards went virtual this year!
Traditionally, volunteer awards are presented by the Board of Commissioners during Board Session. Out of caution, we opted to do it a little differently this year.
On behalf of the Board of Commissioners, Department Heads or volunteer supervisors helped to present awards privately to each recipient. Then the Board of Commissioners publicly recognized volunteer winners through photos at their May 27, 2020 Board Session. With great pleasure, we present the 2019 Volunteer Awards:

2019 Outstanding Program/Department Volunteer
Three individuals were recognized for their outstanding contribution to a Marion County program, the customer or clientele served, and the community served by the program.
2019 Advisory Board Volunteer of the Year
One individual is recognized for their service, leadership and commitment to a Marion County advisory board, committee or task force.
2019 Youth Volunteer of the Year
This award was developed to recognize volunteer accomplishments of young people 24 years and under.
2019 Commissioner Mary Pearmine Volunteer Group of the Year
This award honors the late Mary Pearmine who served as commissioner for Marion County from 1991- 98. In addition to being the first woman commissioner, she was also a champion of volunteers and volunteer groups. The name of the volunteer group receiving the Mary Pearmine award is added to the perpetual plaque displayed at Courthouse Square in downtown Salem.


2019 Judge Rex Hartley Volunteer of the Year
The late Rex Hartley served as a county judge and commissioner for Marion County from 1951-66. Judge Hartley was dedicated to involving citizens in the development of the county. The volunteer receiving the Judge Rex Hartley award is given an engraved award, and his or her name is added to the perpetual plaque displayed at Courthouse Square in downtown Salem.
