What is a Sexually Transmitted Infection?
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are infections passed from one person to another during oral, vaginal, or anal sex. STIs are very common, with 20 million new infections every year in the United States. Chlamydia, gonorrhea, HIV, and syphilis are all sexually transmitted infections.
One of the most common STIs in our community is syphilis. In Marion County, cases of syphilis increased 216% from 2018-2022. This only accounts for reported cases, which means there are likely many more people infected with syphilis who don’t know it, or don’t know how to seek testing and treatment for it.
Anyone who is sexually active - whether oral, vaginal, or anal – is at risk for STIs. Those with new or more than one partner have a greater risk, but everyone who is sexually active should get tested regularly. For information on a specific STI, click the links below.

Sexually Transmitted Infection Testing
Many people do not show sexually transmitted infection (STI) symptoms, which is a common reason for not seeking testing. If you are sexually active, you need to get tested. Call your doctor or make an appointment at our Public Health Clinic. Our mobile Health Van also offers STI testing at various locations throughout the County.
To make an appointment at our Public Health Clinic, call (503) 588-5342, Monday thru Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Appointments for STI testing and treatment are available Monday thru Thursday.
No one is turned away for inability to play or lack of insurance. Appointments are easy and results are available within 7-14 days. If any of your tests are positive, we will contact you and get you started on treatment.
Our Health Van, which began operating in 2018, is an important resource for our county. The van enables our team to go into the community and provide individuals with safe and confidential testing. To reach as many people as possible, our Health Van is scheduled for various events and locations throughout Marion County.

Sexually Transmitted Infection Prevention
Left untreated, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can cause serious complications like infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease, cancer, and more. Prevention is key! Take steps to keep yourself safe any time
you are having sex, whether it’s oral, vaginal, or anal.
1. Use a condom every time, even for oral sex.
2. Get your HPV and Hepatitis B vaccines.
3. Limit your number of sexual partners.
4. Get tested and finish any treatment before having sex with a new partner.
5. Talk openly with all new partners about your STI status.
